Last updated on 6/11/2015 by kah.Contamination cleanup sites in Thurston County, WA. Up until 2015, Thurston County Environmental Health Solid & Hazardous Waste mapped and monitored these sites. Their work was funded by a Site Hazard Assessment from the Washington State Department of Ecology. The grant was not renewed after 2015. For the most recent site-specific information, please see the Washington State Department of Ecology's Cleanup Sites website. According to the Washington State Department of Ecology, "a cleanup site is a place where a toxic substance is harming or threatening humans or the environment. Toxic substances can include: petroleum (gasoline, diesel, oil, etc.), heavy metals (lead, arsenic, etc.), chemicals and pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (PCBs, dioxins, furans, etc.). Toxic substances can contaminate multiple types of media, including: soil, sediment (in bays, shorelines, estuaries, lakes, rivers, etc.), water (groundwater, fresh or marine water, and stormwater or surface runoff), air (indoor and outdoor air, soil gas, and vapor intrusion), Under state and federal laws, people or entities who pollute the air, land, or water are responsible for cleaning up the contamination."

Contaminant Definitions:
1. Base/Neutral/Acid Organics- Hazardous substances typically included in the EPA's priority pollutant compound list.
2. Halogenated Organic Compounds- Organic compounds, typically solvents, with one or more of the halogens incorporated into their structure.
3. EPA Priority Pollutants Metals.
4. Metals- Other- Other non priority pollutant metals.
5. "Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB)- A specific 'family' of aromatic chlorinated organic compounds, often referred to as "AROCLOR".
6. Pesticides- Chemical agents used to control pest such as: fungicides, herbicides and insecticides.
7. Petroleum Products- Crude oil and any reaction thereof. Each of these materials may consist of many specific chemical compounds.
8. Phenolic Compounds-Hazardous substances typically included in the acid extractable fraction of EPA's priority pollutant compound list.
9. Non-Halogenated Solvents- Organic solvents, typically volatile or semi-volatile, not containing any halogens.
10. Dioxin- A family of more than 70 compounds of chlorinated dioxins.
11. Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)- Hydrocarbons composed of two or more benzene rings.
12. Reactive Wastes.
13. Corrosive Wastes- Wastes that are highly corrosive as defined by the Dangerous Waste Regulation (WAC 173-303-090(6)).
14. Radioactive Wastes- Wastes that emit more than background levels of radiation.
15. Conventional Contaminants Organic- Unspecified organic matter imposes an oxygen demand during its decomposition.
16. Conventional Inorganic.
17. Arsenic- A toxic heavy metal that may be absorbed via ingestion, inhalation, or by permeating skin or mucous membranes.
